MWD Lithium Battery Storage and Battery Field Accident Handling

Due to the chemistry in the battery, the following precautions should be taken when storing battery nipples:

1) New/reused battery shorts: Batteries should be stored in a low temperature (10-25 degrees Celsius), dry and waterproof device. If the ambient temperature of storing batteries exceeds 32 degrees Celsius, this will affect the service life of the batteries. Adverse effects, in addition, must not be stored in the sun, the protective layer on the battery should be preserved until the battery is to be used, so that the positive battery will not be partially short-circuited.
2) The battery nipple used on site should be placed in the probe box, waterproof, heat-insulated, and dry, can not accept direct sunlight, and put protective tape on both ends and the wire groove to prevent accidental short circuit,

On-site identification of battery leakage and disposal

Typical battery field accidents are due to ambient temperatures and shocks to the battery pack that is beyond the safe operating range of the battery cells, therefore, for field operations, potential problems can be predicted. Most of the accidents are due to being placed in the bottom of the well for a long time, there is no cycling, and the cycling temperature is close to the tool's operating limit (150°C), with drill string vibration and other shocks. It should be noted that the temperature is stable compared to the temperature measured by the MWD tool during cycling The downhole temperature range (without mud circulation) is usually 20°C higher. The above situation often occurs when the drill string is stuck at the bottom of the hole for a period of time, so please pay attention to the following phenomena when removing the downhole tools from the drill floor:

1) Disconnect the connection between the MWD pulser generator and the battery canister, the connector will be damaged/blackened, and acid fumes may be smelled or found.
2) In severe cases, the perforation will be found on one or more pressure cylinders.
